Twelve Houses in Indian Astrology

Twelve Houses in Horoscope describes an individual`s life which also possesses twelve areas. The twelve houses bear their individual ruling planet, their meaning and their related zodiac sign. The entire life aspects and qualities of the person are recorded in the twelve houses of a horoscope. The houses are also known as `Sthanas` or `Bhavas`. From the point of view of the birth of the individual, i.e. the exact location of the birth, and the exact time when the sky or zodiac belt was perceived, is drawn out in the form of twelve houses. Each zodiac occupies a specific house of the chart. The horoscope`s first house rules the thirty degree space where there is the Eastern horizon. The First house of horoscope is also known as the `Ascendant` or `Lagna`. It is the most important house of all. This house summarizes the inner personal traits of that person along with the general aspects of entire life. The seventh house of horoscope is directly across the first house, or to the Western horizon. Starting from the first house to the seventh house are present the second through sixth houses. Directly over the head of seventh house will be the tenth house. Thus, up and straight into the space where the Sun beams during noon on us happens to be the tenth house. Straight below the feet of the tenth house covering the span of space on the other side of the earth from it, is the fourth house.

The first house of horoscope takes care of the Eastern horizon, the second house is just below the Eastern horizon, the third house is deeply below the Eastern horizon, the fourth house is directly underneath the child, the fifth house is underneath him and behind a little bit. The sixth house is underneath him and quiet a bit behind him. The seventh house of horoscope is behind him covering the Western or Sunset horizon. The eighth house is just over his shoulder when he turns his head around and looks behind himself. The ninth house is above the top back part of his head, the tenth house is straight over his head, the eleventh house is what he sees when he looks upwards but not straight up and the twelfth house is little over the eastern horizon and this position moves us again to the first house, which leads the eastern horizon.

In this way, the entire 360 degree circular span of space surrounding the child and the earth are divided into twelve equal thirty degree sections, each of which has a number from one to twelve and is known as a house. Studying the aspects of life governed by these houses forms the core of astrology. The tenth house of horoscope, for example, i.e., the span of space directly overhead, governs power, position and an individual`s career to a large degree. In this span of space any planet during birth of a child affects greatly the baby`s power, career and status in life.
